There are many different materials that can be used to create your perfect space, we obviously think that oak is the best option. Traditional oak timber-frame buildings in the UK have lasted hundreds of years with minimal structural degradation and many have become Listed buildings. A softwood Shed (e.g., pine, spruce, fir) has a typical lifespan: • Untreated softwood: 5–10 years • Pressure-treated softwood: 15–25 years • High-quality cladding + good maintenance: maybe 25–30 years Vulnerable to: • Rot if ground moisture rises • UV degradation • Warping and movement • Insects Whether it is a potting shed or a swimming pool cover, the benefits of using oak are great and often not as expensive as people think. 1. Timber Options • Oak (Hardwood) Very long-lasting (80–200+ years) Premium cost, beautiful Low maintenance Oak is a hardwood with high natural resistance to: • Rot and decay • Insects • Moisture • Softwood (Pine, Spruce, Fir) Cheaper Lifespan 10–30 years Needs regular treatment • Cedar Naturally rot-resistant Smells great, stable, lightweight Lifespan 30–50 years More expensive than softwood, less than oak • Larch Durable softwood, similar lifespan to cedar Good for cladding or full buildings 2.
